If you live on Chicago's North Shore, you already know the feeling — you step outside for an evening on the deck and within minutes you're swatting mosquitoes. But when does mosquito season actually start in Illinois, and how early should you be thinking about protection?
When Mosquitoes Become Active in Illinois
Mosquitoes don't disappear in winter — they overwinter as eggs or dormant adults and wait for the right conditions to become active again. The trigger is temperature. Once outdoor temperatures consistently reach around 50°F, mosquito eggs begin to hatch and overwintered adults start moving again.
In the Chicago area and along the North Shore, that typically happens in early to mid-April. By May, populations are building steadily. June through August is peak season — warm temperatures, humidity from Lake Michigan, and standing water from spring rains create ideal breeding conditions. Activity begins to taper in September and largely ends after the first hard frost, usually in October or November.
What Makes the North Shore a High-Activity Zone
The North Shore has several features that naturally support higher mosquito populations:
Proximity to Lake Michigan — moisture and humidity stay elevated throughout summer
Wooded ravines and forest preserves — shaded, damp areas are prime mosquito habitat
Mature landscaping — dense shrubs and tall grass provide daytime resting spots
Rainfall pooling — low spots in yards, clogged gutters, and decorative water features collect standing water where mosquitoes breed
Communities like Lake Forest, Highland Park, Deerfield, and Libertyville are especially prone to mosquito pressure due to the combination of wooded lots and proximity to water.
The Illinois Mosquito Season Month by Month
March – Early April: Temperatures are still fluctuating. Mosquito eggs may begin hatching during warm spells, but populations are minimal. This is the ideal time to do yard prep — clean gutters, address drainage issues, and schedule your first treatment before they emerge.
Late April – May: Mosquito activity picks up noticeably. Early-season species emerge first, and populations grow quickly as temps stabilize. If you're going to start a treatment program, this is the window to begin.

June – August: Peak season. Mosquitoes are most active at dawn and dusk, but on humid days they'll bite throughout the day. Breeding cycles are short (7–10 days from egg to adult), so populations can explode quickly without regular management.
September: Activity begins declining as nights get cooler, but mosquitoes remain a real nuisance through most of the month, especially during warm spells.
October – First Frost: Mosquito populations drop sharply. The first hard frost effectively ends the season.
When Should You Start Mosquito Treatments?
The answer is earlier than most people think. Waiting until you're already getting bitten means the population has already built up. Professional mosquito control services recommend starting treatments in late April or early May to get ahead of the breeding cycle.
For organic and plant-based treatments in particular, consistency matters. Starting early and maintaining a regular treatment schedule through the summer provides significantly better protection than reacting after populations spike.
What You Can Do Right Now
Even before mosquito season peaks, there are steps you can take to reduce pressure on your property:
Empty standing water from birdbaths, buckets, plant saucers, and low spots after every rain
Clean gutters so water drains freely instead of pooling
Trim grass and vegetation to reduce shaded resting areas
Schedule your first organic treatment for late April so you're protected heading into Memorial Day weekend
