If you have pets, mosquito season creates a real dilemma. You want to protect your family from bites — but you don't want to expose your dogs and cats to harsh chemicals in the process. The good news is that effective, pet-safe mosquito control is absolutely achievable. Here's what you need to know.
Why Mosquitoes Are a Health Risk for Pets Too
Most pet owners know mosquitoes are annoying, but fewer realize they're a genuine health threat to animals. Mosquitoes are the primary vector for heartworm disease in both dogs and cats — a serious, potentially fatal parasitic infection transmitted through a single mosquito bite. Beyond heartworm, mosquitoes can also transmit other parasites and cause uncomfortable skin reactions in sensitive animals.
Dogs are especially vulnerable because they spend more time outdoors, but indoor cats can be bitten too — particularly near windows and doors or during outdoor excursions.
What Makes a Mosquito Treatment Pet-Safe?
When evaluating mosquito control products and services for a home with pets, the key factors to consider are:
Active ingredients — are they naturally derived or synthetic? How quickly do they break down in the environment?
Application method — barrier sprays applied to vegetation and allowed to dry are very different from broadcast foggers that leave residue on surfaces pets contact
Re-entry time — how long after treatment should pets stay off the treated area?
Toxicity profile — has the product been assessed for safety in dogs and cats specifically?
Pet-Friendly Mosquito Control Options
Organic/Botanical Barrier Treatments
Plant-based barrier sprays using ingredients like pyrethrins, rosemary oil, and peppermint oil are among the safest professional mosquito control options for pet-owning households. These products are applied to vegetation — shrubs, groundcover, shaded areas — where adult mosquitoes rest. Once dry (typically 30–60 minutes), the treated surfaces are safe for pets. Unlike synthetic pyrethroid sprays, botanical formulations break down quickly and don't accumulate in soil or on surfaces.
Bti Larval Control
Bacillus thuringiensis israelensis (Bti) products — available as dunks, bits, or granules — can be placed in standing water sources like birdbaths, decorative ponds, rain barrels, and low spots to kill mosquito larvae before they become adults. Bti is completely safe for pets, fish, birds, and wildlife. It is used extensively in organic farming and by mosquito abatement districts precisely because of its highly targeted mode of action.
In2Care Mosquito Stations
In2Care stations are an innovative larviciding and auto-dissemination system. Mosquitoes enter the station, pick up a biological agent, and then spread it to other water sources as they lay eggs — killing larvae across a wider area than a single dunk can reach. The active ingredients are low-toxicity and the stations are enclosed, making them safe to place in yards with curious dogs and cats.
Physical Controls
Beyond treatments, several non-chemical approaches help reduce mosquito pressure around pet-friendly homes:
Eliminate standing water in pet water bowls (refresh daily), kiddie pools, and yard drainage areas
Install or repair window and door screens
Use outdoor fans on patios — mosquitoes are weak fliers and fans disrupt their ability to locate hosts
Keep grass trimmed and shrubs thinned to reduce resting habitat
What to Discuss with Your Vet
Yard treatment is only one part of a complete pet protection strategy. Your veterinarian should be your first call for:
Year-round heartworm prevention — this is essential regardless of what you do in your yard
Annual heartworm testing — recommended for dogs, and increasingly for cats in high-risk areas
Topical or oral flea/tick/mosquito repellents — several vet-recommended products are safe and effective for dogs; options for cats are more limited, so always consult before applying anything
Never apply human mosquito repellents (especially products containing DEET) to pets — they can be toxic, particularly to cats.
How Evergreen Protects Pets and Families
At Evergreen Organic Mosquito Control, all of our treatments use plant-based, low-impact products that are safe for households with dogs, cats, and children. We apply targeted barrier sprays to vegetation — not to grass surfaces where pets walk and play — and we use Bti and In2Care stations for larval control. Our re-entry time after treatment is typically 30 minutes once the application is dry.
We serve pet-owning families across Highland Park, Lake Forest, Deerfield, Northbrook, and all of Chicago's North Shore.
